ground fire blowing off his canopy and
inflicting injuries to his face. Returned to
Kimpo and landed. Failed to return after a
ground attack mission after attack run on two
tunnels 3 mi E of Sinmak and was last seen
climbing away from target area 27/01/53.

therefore A77 serial not taken up. The aircraft
circled the pilot a few times on the way down.

The pilot WO R. Guthrie ejected at a height of
8707 metres, an unofficial record at the time
and he was the first RAAF pilot to eject from an
aircraft under active service and the second
from an RAAF Aircraft. The parachute descent
took 28 minutes. WO Guthrie was taken as a POW.
The Meteor on
display in the Queensland Air Museum painted
as A77-721 is really RAF WA880.

77SQN’s CO in the second half of 1955, CO SQNLDR
Roy Royston (he had been WGCDR in 1954 and early
1955 but with postwar restructuring, like many
others reverted a rank), had A77-881 marked with
a green/aluminium checked band across the rear
fuselage – this may have been a trial before
selection of a final design. SQNLDR CO’s pennant
under the windshield on the port side. These
markings did not remain long in 1955, as the
aircraft was changed to the green/white
checkered tail for the 77SQN formation display
team.
A77-875 has been restored to replicate these
markings by Fighterworld at Williamtown..
Withdrawn from use 25/07/58.
